Glutathione affects skin color primarily through how it interacts with melanin production in the body. The lightening effect typically comes down to three main biological mechanisms:
- Inhibition of Tyrosinase: Tyrosinase is a key enzyme required by the body to produce melanin (the pigment responsible for skin, hair, and eye color). Glutathione can directly and indirectly suppress tyrosinase activity.
- Switching Pigment Production (Eumelanin to Pheomelanin): The body produces two main types of melanin: eumelanin (dark brown/black pigment) and pheomelanin (red/yellow pigment). Glutathione triggers a pathway shift that encourages cells to produce lighter pheomelanin instead of darker eumelanin.
- Neutralizing Free Radicals: Oxidative stress and UV radiation stimulate melanin production as a defense mechanism. Because glutathione is a master antioxidant, it neutralizes those free radicals, preventing the oxidative triggers that normally darken the skin.
When taken in high doses—especially via intravenous (IV) infusions or concentrated supplements—these combined actions can gradually reduce overall skin pigmentation or help fade hyperpigmentation over time.
